Every dyslexia tutor has their own style of teaching. With the many variations of personality, background and experience, it makes sense that dyslexia tutors would conduct their dyslexia tutoring with different styles. In my own years of dyslexia tutoring, I have sometimes been asked what makes a dyslexia tutor capable and effective. There are many different styles of teaching out there, but three of the most important elements in dyslexia tutoring are the method, approach, and tutor’s personality.
I will be discussing these three elements today, and in the posts that follow. Let’s start with the method. Every dyslexia tutor should be trained in a method for working with dyslexics. There are many methods out there, but in our experience, the really effective ones are based on the Orton-Gillingham Method. The Orton Gillingham Method was created many years ago, and it has been effectively used to help individuals with reading difficulties for many years. Here at Dyslexia Connect, our online tutoring program is based on the principles of the Orton Gillingham Method. One of the things that makes this method so effective is that it is based on a phonetic approach to reading. For a dyslexic student, finding a dyslexia tutor who uses a phonics based approach is vital, because it is the approach that has been shown to work over and over again with dyslexics.
At Dyslexia Connect Online Tutoring, all of our dyslexia tutors are trained and skilled at using our method. When you sign up for our online dyslexia tutoring program, you can be assured that your student is getting top of the line dyslexia tutoring.
