Is There a Cure For Dyslexia?

A common question about dyslexia is whether there is a “cure” for it. A dyslexia tutor tends to field this question quite often. On the internet, you can find a number of products and services claiming that they offer a cure for dyslexia. However, these claims are based on a misunderstanding of dyslexia itself. Current scientific evidence shows that dyslexia is a passed on genetically in families. When there is a dyslexic child in a family, it is quite common that a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle are also dyslexic. Since dyslexia is genetic, and it is not simply a learning difficulty caused by bad reading habits or a lack of knowledge, it is not something that can simply be “cured”.

However, even though there is no cure for dyslexia, there are tremendously effective ways of treating it and providing a dyslexic child a path to success. Dyslexia tutoring that uses a phonics based approach is very effective at helping a dyslexic child or adult increase their reading, spelling and comprehension ability. Here at Dyslexia Connect Online Tutoring, we have seen examples again and again of dyslexic children and adults dramatically improving over time with the right approach. So, there is no need to be discouraged if you or a loved one are dyslexic. Dyslexia is a learning challenge that must be dealt with in the right way, but it does not have to be a barrier to a successful and happy life.
